NEW DELHI: The Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi has joined hands with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to make the quadrennial event ‘Green Games’. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has roped in the UNEP for both the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games as well the third Youth Commonwealth Games in Pune next year. Recognising that major sporting events make impact on the environment in many ways like clearing land for setting up event sites, the need for large volumes of water, waste disposal, the organising committee has made a pledge to ensure that the Games will be a ‘Green Games’. The UNEP has certain standards for compliance that will have to be met before the stamp of ‘Green Games’ is awarded. The IOA President Suresh Kalmadi said that the various stakeholders were already in the process of meeting these requirements. However, the organising committee has shown scant regard to the complaints from the various quarters like felling of scores of trees, some century-old and rare, at various sites marked for infrastructure development for the Games. — Principal Correspondent
