Congress wins four ZPTCs, TDP two

HYDERABAD: The Congress Party won four Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and conceded two to the Telugu Desam due to rebel problems in the by-elections for which the results were announced on Saturday. The ruling party bagged Hukumpeta (Visakhapatnam district), Ungutur (West Godavari), Midgil (Mahabubnagar) and Pichatur (Chittoor) while the TDP wrested Heeramandalam (Srikakulam) and A. S. Peta (Nellore). The TDP wrested the A.S. Peta ZPTC seat in Nellore district which fell vacant after the resignation of B. Raghavendra Reddy who won was elected to the Legislative Council. The Congress, however, won the MPTC seats in Santhadasupalli in Gudur mandal and Irakam in Tada mandal of the district. In the other by-elections to MPTCs, the TDP won from Penagalur in Kadapa while a rebel G.V.S. Umamaheswara Rao defeated the official nominee in Penugonda seat in West Godavari district.
