BANGALORE: The Congress on Saturday alleged that the State Government had provided false information to the Centre to get the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Nandagudi near Hoskote in Bangalore Rural district. Promoters of the SEZ obtained in-principle approval from the Board of Approval, the single window agency, of the Centre on Thursday. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, KPCC president M. Mallikarjun Kharge said the party would take up the issue with the Centre if the State Government and the promoter, Skil Infrastructure, violated the SEZ norms while executing the project. The controversial project is likely to come up on 12,350 acres with an investment of Rs. 15,000 crore. Mr. Kharge said the promoter had to acquire lands only with the consent of farmers. The party would not allow forcible acquisition of lands. The party was not against establishment of SEZs. But the Government had to follow the norms while clearing projects, he said. Referring to the presidential election, the State Congress president said the NDA had lowered the dignity of the high office by levelling baseless allegations against the UPA nominee Pratibha Patil. The NDA presidential nominee Bhairon Singh Shekhawat had to answer 40 questions posed to him by the Rajasthan Matadata Mandal. The mandal had levelled serious charges against Mr. Shekhawat, he said. The Congress had not asked the Janatal Dal (S) to support its nominee in the elections. It had only sought the support of independent legislators of the State. Ms. Patil would emerge victorious, he said. Protest
The Bangalore City Youth Congress Committee on Saturday organised a protest march here against the Government’s alleged failure to address the issue of farmers’ suicides.
