Risk factors of heart attacks modifiable, say experts

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A majority of known risk factors for heart attacks are now modifiable, claim health experts.

According to medical research findings cited by the Heart Care Foundation of India, nine potentially modifiable factors account for over 90 per cent of the population’s attributable risk of a first heart attack.

These include smoking, hypertension, diabetes, abdominal obesity, psychosocial factors, dyslipidemia, daily consumption of fruits and vegetables regular alcohol consumption among others regular physical activity.

Aspirin

Experts also said aspirin is recommended for primary prevention of heart diseases for men and women whose 10-year risk of a first heart attack event is six per cent or greater.

Smoking cessation reduces the risk of both heart attack and stroke.

It was pointed out that many observational studies had shown a strong inverse relationship between leisure time activity and decreased risks of cardiovascular diseases. Doctors recommend a brisk walk for 20 minutes for primary prevention.
