TN’s effort to give handball a fillip

CHENNAI: In keeping with its efforts to give the sport an impetus in the state, the Tamil Nadu Handball Association has come forward to organise the national sub-junior (for boys) and mini nationals (for girls) from July 18 to 23 at the Nehru indoor stadium here.

Briefing newsmen on Friday, A. Saravanan, Secretary, TNHB said prior to the nationals, the TNHA was, for the first time, planning to organise an under-15 state championship on July 15 and 16 from where the state team for the sub-junior phase of the national championship would be picked.

He said for the State championship, 60 teams would be in the fray and finally 16 boys would be selected.

For the mini national phase, the state girls’ team had already been selected.

Mr. Saravanan said that the national championship would be conducted on a league-cum-knockout phase and for this the teams (27 of them had confirmed entry) would be placed in four pools.

Also present at the media briefing were stadium officer, N. Manoharan and TNHBA treasurer, Udaykumar.

Manoharan said all arrangements had been made for the competition to be held in the indoor hall.

Udaykumar said the winner of the national would be presented with GKD Trophy, donated by the GKD group, the key sponsor of the championships.

Matches postponed

Due to inclement weather, Sunday’s (July 15th) TNCA lower division cricket league matches in Chennai have been postponed.

A fresh date will be announced later.
