Daredevils to enthral today

VIJAYAWADA: Ensconced majestically on an army truck, ‘Bravo’, the mascot of the forthcoming 4th Military World Games arrived at the Police Parade Grounds on Sunday followed by a dozen cars, trucks and jeeps in the run-up to the second biggest games after the Olympics to be held at Hyderabad from October 14 to 21.

District Collector Navin Mittal accorded a ceremonial welcome to the army commanders in charge of the rally, which was flagged off at Hyderabad on July 8.

The rally reached the city in the evening from Guntur and after a day’s stay on Monday; the rally would proceed to Kakinada. Several NCC cadets representing city colleges and schools lined up on the streets to greet the caravan of cars, carrying the messages of all-important games staged for the first time in India.

Army band

Adding a dash of grace was the army band atop a truck churning out popular numbers like “Bombay Se Ayya Mera Dost.” The army men also were seen distributing caps of the Military World Games to the children who lined up on both sides of the road.

To keep the army men in good humour, Lanco Kondapalli Power Private Limited organised a cultural fete in which folk artistes from Srikakulam exhibited their traditional ‘duppu’ skills.

Monday would be an eventful day as army men would enthral the denizens with their daredevil acts. Sky diving, hot balloon and motorcycle manoeuvres would be organised at IGMC Stadium. Much to the curiosity of the passers-by, army jawans gave final touches to the hot balloon draped dazzling red, blue, while and yellow stripes, which would be hit the sky on Monday.

Despite the soggy conditions, the organisers were keen on conducting the friendly cricket match between the Army XI and the Krishna XI.
