Dairy farming good option, ryots told

Government decides to procure milk in all villages

ANANTAPUR: Minister for Agriculture N. Raghuveera Reddy has observed that alternative activity like dairy farming taken up by farmers in the neighbouring Chittoor district on a large scale has improved their standard of living.

The State Government had been making efforts to provide alternative employment activity to all farmers who depend solely on agriculture in the district, he said while speaking to mediapersons here on Sunday after reviewing the action plan on improving dairy farming.

He said that he had noticed marked difference in the standard of living of families having milch animals in comparison with those not having the animals in his constituency Madakasira. A survey conducted in the district 10 days back had revealed that about 3.38 lakh litres of milk was being produced every day.

Accordingly, the Government has decided to procure milk in all villages by connecting them to milk routes of cooling centres at mandal-level. Milk chilling centres have been already functioning in 21 mandals and infrastructure was being created for setting up such facility in 32 other mandals. They would start functioning from the current season itself, he added.

Buildings have been constructed for 32 milk chilling centres and they would be provided water and electricity facilities soon. About 1.1 lakh families have been identified for dairy farming and they were already given fodder seed on subsidy. A ghee-making machine would be given to the district , with a marketing tie-up with TTD.

Managing Director of AP Dairy Development Cooperative Federation, Adhar Sinha said that they were supplying milk procurement containers (cans) to all mandals and training on maintaining hygiene was also being given. District Collector N. Sridhar, Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha, Anantapur MP A. Venkatarami Reddy, legislators B. Narayana Reddy and S. Sailajanath, officials of agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy development, also participated in the meeting.
