EXPRESSING IRE: Members of the Akhila Bharat Veerashaiva Mahasabha, led by its president Bheemanna Khandre, burning the controversial book in front of the Town Hall in Bangalore on Sunday.
Bangalore: Members of All India Veerashiva Mahasabha, led by its president Bheemanna Khandre, on Sunday burnt a copy of Banjegere Jayaprakash’s controversial book, “Anudeva Horaganavanu”, as a mark of protest. They were demanding a ban on the book. The members said they will continue to burn copies of Mr. Jayaprakash’s book till the Government takes action in the matter. The book has raised a storm in literary circles over the comments made about the 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara and his sister Akka Nagamma. Mr. Khandre said the comments made in the book had hurt the religious sentiments of a section of society. He said a judgment of the Supreme Court has made it clear that nobody has unfettered freedom to say or write whatever they wanted. The right of freedom of expression should not be used to injure religious sentiments, Mr. Khandre noted. He said a protest rally will be organised on July 27.
