Traffic chaos

It is total chaos at Salem Junction terminus between 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Traffic is not regulated, there is debris all around, road is half-dug and not levelled. Two-wheelers, autos, trucks and even garbage clearing trucks park haphazardly disrupting traffic flow. There is no pedestrian path and pedestrians have to wade through moving vehicles. Police should be posted in the area permanently to regulate traffic. Trucks should be prevented from entering Salem Junction through Tiruvagoundanur bypass during peak hours. Corporation authorities should clear garbage in the area at night.

Well-deserved award

United Writers’ Association’s ‘Citizen Leadership Award’ for this year has been conferred on Mr. R. Nagarajan, a renowned social worker of Salem. Mr. Nagarajan richly deserves the award for his contribution to environmental ethics and leadership development. Because of his untiring effort the Anchaneya temple in Vijayaragahva Nagar is a place of cleanliness and spirituality.

Open wells

Water is used for drinking, cooking, washing and many other purposes. The human body has 70 per cent water molecules. In olden days openwells were the natural source of groundwater. But nowadays after borewells came to the world for ground water source, abandoned open wells are used as dustbins. The wastes dumped in the open wells mix with the ground water . This polluted water will cause dreaded diseases like Chikunguniya. Government should take neccessary steps to stop old open wells being used as dustbins.

Good move

Southern Railway has done well to provide stoppage at Coimbatore junction for train no. 2695/96 Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram superfast express from July 1. This will provide overnight connectivity between Coimbatore and Thiruvananthapuram. Also, the Coimbatore-Nagercoil overnight daily express has been announced. This will provide an alternate train link from Coimbatore to Madurai and the southern districts to compensate for the lost train connectivity because of cancellation of metre gauge trains. We hope that with the ongoing railway infrastructure works in the Coimbatore region, the single line bottleneck, will be removed.
