Protesters condemn looting of four houses in Agumbe They demand protection to people in the region
SHIMOGA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a dharna at the entrance of the office of the Superintendent of Police here on Monday to demand steps to contain naxalite menace in the malnad region. They withdrew the demonstration following the assurance given by Additional Director-General of Police (Anti Naxal Force) Shankar Bidari and Superintendent of Police Arun Chakravarthy over phone from Agumbe that no efforts were spared to apprehend the “naxalites”. They said the combing operation in the forest area had been intensified in the light of the looting of four houses near Agumbe in the early hours of Sunday. The BJP workers, including women led by BJP district unit president Girish Patel arrived at the office of the Superintendent of Police at 12.30 p.m. and squatted at the entrance of the office demanding that the same tactics employed in capturing brigand Veerappan should be applied in apprehending the naxalites. They condemned the looting of the four houses near Agumbe in the early hours of Sunday and asked the police to provide protection to the people living in the naxal-prone areas in the malnad region. Girish Patel, who addressed the demonstrators, alleged that the police had failed to contain the activities of naxalites in and around Agumbe in Tirthahalli taluk which were going on unabated. He said the failure of the police in containing the naxal activities had made the people in and around Agumbe in the malnad region were apprehensive about their safety. The former municipal president R.K. Siddharamanna said the Government should view the anti-national activities by the naxalites seriously. He said while Bangalore had become the haven for the ISI activities, Shimoga had become a base for the naxal activities. He said the Government should not have withdrawn the list of the naxal sympathisers as those who were included in the list continued to be associated with their activities. Chairman of the Shimoga Urban Development Authority S.N. Channabasappa, Jyothi Prakash, Dattatri, N.J.Rajasekhar, BJP Mahila Morcha district president Suvarna Shankar and Jnaneshwar.
