Students face difficulties in going to Valparai as the area received rain on most days
Facing hardship: Students at the Government High School at Attakatti in Valparai taluk. —
VALPARAI: Students of Government High School in Attakatti, on the way to Pollachi to Valparai, face hardship to pursue Plus One and Two courses as they have to travel more than an hour in the hilly terrain. Many of the wards of poor estate workers drop the idea of studying further owing to this inconvenience. The students have either to travel for nearly one-and-a-half hours to go to Valparai, which is 28 km away, or go to Kottur in the plains that requires one-hour travel. Passed
At present, 51 students, including 20 girls, more than 80 per cent of them from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, are studying in SSLC. Forty students have passed the SSLC examination this year. Owing to the slump in the tea industry hundreds of workers left estates and settled down in the plains, particularly in Tirupur and Coimbatore, and this has increased the number of students, sources said. This school caters to the students from Waterfall Estate, Umadimadakku and Kavarkal areas besides those from Attakatti. Hilly terrain
A parent said the students were facing great difficulties in going to Valparai as this hilly terrain received rains in more days. He suggested that if the Government upgraded the High School to Higher Secondary status students from Kadamparai High School would also be benefited.
