Rs.73.5 cr. for development work in Tuticorin district

Stalin lays foundation stone for many projects

Tuticorin: The Minister for Local Administration, M.K. Stalin, laid foundation stone for development work to be taken up in the district on an outlay of Rs.73.50 crore, inaugurated projects costing Rs.27.65 crore and distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.1.90 crore, here on Monday.

The new projects for which foundation stones were laid included an underground sewerage scheme (USS) to be established in Tuticorin Municipal Limits at a cost of Rs.46.40 crore. The scheme would benefit a population of 2.3 lakh.

Besides, five concrete roads, five black top roads and four storm-water drains would be established in the Municipal wards here at an estimated outlay of Rs.101.25 lakh.

A super specialty 500-bedded block would be set up on the Tuticorin Medical College and Hospital premises at a cost of Rs.17.09 crore.

Of the remaining works (for which foundation stone was laid), a water supply and rejuvenation project would be established in the district at a cost of Rs.6.15 crore to cover 114 habitations spreading over nine panchayat unions and a hostel for Adi Dravidar community in Srivaikundam at Rs.31.5 lakh.

The Minister inaugurated three combined drinking water schemes set up by Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board (TWAD) at a total outlay of Rs.15.79 crore. Of the three, one scheme would be established to cover a population of 98,432 residing at 159 rural habitations under Tiruchendur, Udangudi and Alwarthirunageri unions.

While the remaining two schemes would cover 178 habitations under Kovilpatti, Kayathar, Ottapidaram and Tuticorin unions.

The other major projects opened were an additional bus stand constructed at Kovilpatti on an outlay of Rs.1.8 crore and a marriage hall established by the municipal administration in Tuticorin at a cost of Rs.1.3 crore.

Mr. Stalin gave away welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.1.9 crore to 3,060 beneficiaries under 15 schemes envisaged by the Departments of Health, TAHDO, rural development, social welfare and revenue.
