Corrections and clarifications

  • A sentence in the first paragraph of an article “The runaway Presidential campaign” (Editorial page, July 14, 2007) was: “The American media treat residential misdemeanours as legitimate fodder with newspap ers, television and the Internet competing to expose campaign trail scandals.” “Residential” should have been “Presidential”.

  • The caption of the accompanying AFP photograph in the lead story “No clampdown on visas: Australia” (July 12, 2007, page 1) was: “The visiting Australian Defence Minister Brendan Nelson (left) with Army Chief General J.J. Singh, Naval Chief Sureesh Mehta and an Air Force official in New Delhi on Wednesday.” While the rank of the Army Chief, (General), was mentioned, the Naval Chief’s rank, which is Admiral, was not indicated. It appears that the Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major, could not attend the programme. His representative, mentioned as “an Air Force official” in the caption, and seen in the picture at extreme right, was Air Marshal B.N. Gokhale, Vice-Chief of Air Staff.

  • The first paragraph of a report “Police officers to discuss joint operation” (Tamil Nadu, July 13, 2007) was: “The brass of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry police on Thursday discussed modalities of a joint opera tion to nab inter-State criminals.” It should have been “top brass”. Top brass (informal) means people in authority or of high military rank.
