Cinema buffs can now go Dutch

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: For aficionados of World Cinema, the Madras Film Society’s screening of seven Dutch films may provide an interesting fare. On Monday, the Society, celebrating its golden jubilee, launched the four-day-long festival with the screening of ‘Doodeind’.

At the inaugural function, Akhila Srinivasan, Honorary Consul of the Netherlands at Chennai, said such films helped in the advancement of “progressive ideas such as humanism, freedom and equity.”

A different perspective

She added that such a screening would give Chennai film-goers an opportunity to view films from a different country, which and would have a meaningful impact.

Visalakshi Nedunchezian, former president of the Madras Film Society, said the Society had become “a cultural centre for the convergence of consulates and embassies of various countries.”

“Powerful medium”

With films becoming a powerful media for mass communication, they were gaining in importance today, she added.

Gabriele Landwehr, Director, Max Muller Bhavan, was present.

The Society has been screening Dutch films for the last four years. The film festival is on until July 20.
