Corporation may make fresh plea to fill up vacancies

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation may make a fresh appeal to the State Government to fill up more than 100 vacancies in various departments in the civic body and also for additional staff.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam told The Hindu on Monday that he and Deputy Mayor N. Karthik may leave for Chennai next week to meet Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, Secretary of Municipal Administration and Water Supply K. Deenabandhu and Commissioner of Municipal Administration Niranjan Mardi to apprise them of the difficulties the Corporation faced in implementing works.

The plan to meet the Minister and the officials comes amid demands from various parties in the Corporation Council to fill the vacancies so that works are not affected.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and a few Independent councillors have demanded a special meeting of the Council to discuss the staff shortage. Responding to the demand, the Mayor said that efforts were already on to get the required number of staff.

Only last week did the Corporation get clearance to appoint 161 conservancy workers and fill up a few posts of junior assistants, engineers, women doctors and multi-purpose health assistants on compassionate grounds.

“We need much more staff than these. But, it is not as if no effort had been taken at all to get the vacancies filled,” he said, referring to the representations already made to the Minister and the officials. “We will submit to them a zone-wise requirement of officials and staff and point out the need for more staff in the Corporation in a growing city.”

As for the special meeting demanded by the Councillors, the Mayor said that this would be discussed with Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran after he returned from a meeting on the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission in Thiruvananthapuram.

With regard to the appointment on compassionate grounds, Mr. Venkatachalam said that the process of checking for the availability of candidates took time as the Corporation itself had been asked to do it, instead of the District Employment Office. “Our only fear is that some candidates may cross the age limit because of this round-about process,” he said.
