Ashwin and Pradeepan shine

Theni: Medium-pacer Ashwin Kumar’s five for 24 and Pradeepan’s knock of 75 helped Kancheepuram pile up 288 runs for nine in 61 overs after skittling out host Theni for a paltry 64 on the opening day of the two-day TNCA inter-district under-19 cricket tournament (second stage) match at Koduvilarpatti, on Monday.

At Theni: Theni 64 in 26 overs (Ashwin Kumar five for 24, R. Karthik three for 18) vs. Kancheepuram 288 for nine in 61 overs (Vijay 34, Pradeepan 75, Aashish Kumar 46, R. Karthik 36, Sudesh five for 77, Palanichamy three for 45).

At Dindigul: Villupuram 247 in 72.4 overs (K. Vignesh 52, A. Parthiban 44, M. Abdur Rahim four for 65, M. Mohamed two for 75) vs. Dindigul 52 for two in 15 overs.
Sethumadhavan, Saravana sizzle

K.R. Sethumadhavan (132, 141b, 21x4) and S.P. Saravana Kumar (106, 130b, 15x4, 1x6) helped host Coimbatore declare its first innings at 334 for eight against Thoothukudi on the opening day of their two-day TNCA under-19 inter-district (second stage) match here on Monday.

The scores: Coimbatore 334 for eight decl. in 74.5 overs (K.R. Sethumadhavan 132, S.P. Saravana Kumar 106, K. Shivakumar four for 86) vs. Thoothukudi 30 for two in 13 overs.
Ganesh triumphs

At Madurai, S. Ganesh Babu of Thiagarajar College and Sithalakshmi Arunachalam of Dolphin School won the boys’ and girls’ u-19 titles respectively in the State-level chess tournament on Sunday.

The results: Boys: U-19: 1. S. Ganesh Babu (Thiagarajar College) 4.5/5; 2. S.S. Manigandan (Dolphin) 4; 3. P. Uma Maheshwaran (Arul Malar) 4.

Girls: U-19: 1. Sithalakshmi Arunachalam (Dolphin) 3.5/4; 2. K. Seethalakshmi (Dolphin) 2.5; 3. R. Karthikeyini (Dolphin) 2.

Sports students honoured

At Virudhunagar, Rotary Club of Virudhunagar honoured 89 sports students of Virudhunagar, who brought laurels to the district by excelling in their respective disciplines in State-level meets and for representing the State teams, State School teams, and University teams in the year 2006 at its sixth annual Outstanding Sports Students function at the Sri Ambal Ramasamy Arangam, on Sunday.

P.C.K. Muralidharan, Secretary, VVV Women’s College Governing Council, and K. Jeyabalan, former Indian Railway basketball player gave away the cash awards amounting to Rs.40,000 to the students in the presence of the Rotary Club Secretary, R. Ramasamy, and the project directors, Idayam V.R. Muthu and M.S.G. Murugan.
Badminton tournament

At Sivakasi, the Tamil Nadu sub-junior inter-district and State badminton championships, sponsored by Rotary Club of Pyro City, will be organised by the Virudhunagar District Badminton Association from August 5 to 9 at the AJ Stadium. Entries close on August 2.
