This Day That Age
The Madras Government have agreed that the management and control of the Padmanabhapuram Palace and Museum in Kanyakumari District may be retained by the Kerala Government, subject to the condition that the maintenance cost of the Palace and Museum is shared equally between the two Governments and that no article therein is removed without the prior approval of the Madras Government. This was stated by Mr. C. Subramaniam, Finance Minister, in the Madras Assembly on July 17. He said “historical reasons” prompted the Madras Government to hand over the Palace to the Kerala Government. Padmanabhapuram was the capital of Travancore in ancient days and the Palace there had historical association with the dynasty of the rulers of Travancore. It was, therefore, represented that the Kerala Government had greater interest in maintaining the Palace than Madras. Since Madras did not want to give up its right, it was agreed that the cost of management of the Palace should be shared equally between the two States.
