VALPARAI: Heavy rain that continued to lash the hill station of Valparai and its surroundings for the last fortnight has affected the normal life here on Tuesday.

Valparai received a rainfall of 185 mm in the 24 hours closing 8 a.m. on Tuesday while Upper and Lower Neerar near here received 335 mm and 208 mm respectively. The Sholayar Dam recorded 220 mm rainfall while Parambikulam reservoir received 368 mm.

Water entered into more than 100 houses and a bus depot of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation in the wee hours of Tuesday as the water course of Navamalai River was blocked. It was a nightmare for the residents of Dobigana, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Vaizhaithottam areas.

Over 20 buses parked at the depot were inundated in the water by around five feet. Recovery vehicle from Pollachi pulled the buses from the depot.

Government and private schools declared holiday for Tuesday and Wednesday. Bus services to the remote areas were affected. However, buses to Valparai from Pollachi and other areas in the plains continued to operate as usual.

On the Valparai-Sholayar Dam stretch, traffic was disrupted for over five hours following land slips in two places.

The shutters were opened at the Sholayar Dam at 6 a.m. as the dam received heavy inflow of 6,493 cusecs. Water level stood at 164.74 feet against the full reservoir level of 165 ft. The dam had already surplussed through saddle way to Parambikulam reservoir when water level reached at 160 feet a few days ago. The shutters were downed at 2.30 p.m. A total of 7,000 cusecs each were released from saddle way and spillway.

Encroachments

Parambikulam Aliyar Project officials say that the Western Ghats have been receiving copious rainfall for the last fortnight.

While Valparai received an average rainfall of 50 mm a day for the last 15 days, Upper Neerar received 125 mm a day.

Revenue and Public Works Department officials conducted inspections to remove the encroachments on Navamalai river that flows through Valparai.

The residents complained that the TNSTC depot, which often inundated in water whenever there was a heavy rain, was the main source blocking the flow of the river.

They demanded the authorities to shift it to some other area.

Meanwhile, two tea-laden lorries parked on the ghat road leading to Chalakkudy at Ambalapally, 44 km from here, fell into a gorge.

The crew escaped unhurt when the lorry slipped into the 300 feet deep valley following heavy rain.
