NAGAPATTINAM: All the tsunami-hit families now accommodated in the temporary shelters in various parts of the district will be provided with permanent houses before the commencement of the northeast monsoon in October, said M.F. Farooqui, Special Commissioner and Commissioner for Revenue Administration, Disaster Management and Mitigation department, here on Tuesday. Mr. Farooqui, who inspected the permanent houses built and under construction by the Government and also by several non-governmental organisations in various parts of the district including Sellur, instructed the district administration to take quick steps to complete the construction before the start of northeast monsoon and hand them over to the beneficiaries. He also instructed the Collector and officials concerned for providing basic amenities like drinking water supply, drainage, power supply and toilet to the colonies of permanent houses before handing them over to the beneficiaries. Mr Farooqui also told the district administration to monitor the quality of construction of permanent houses. The Collector, Tenkasi S. Jawahar, who accompanied Mr. Farooqui said that as many as 11,000 permanent houses had so far been completed and handed over to the beneficiaries out of the 19,000 houses being built in the district. He assured that the remaining houses would be completed before the stipulated time. Development works
Earlier, Mr. Farooqui, who reviewed the progress of various development works including construction of tsunami houses, port works, and also the special welfare schemes launched by the Government, like distribution of free colour television sets, free distribution of land to landless poor farmers, free LPG stove and gas supply scheme with the Collector and other officials at the Collectorate, asked the Collector and officials to speed up all the work and complete them within the time frame. The District Revenue Officer, R. Gnanasekaran, the District Revenue Officer (Tsunami Relief), K. S. Kandasamy, G.Radha, Project Officer, DRDA, G. Radha, Chief Educational Officer, G. Arockiasamy, and senior officials attended the meeting.
