VIZIANAGARAM: TDP Polit Bureau member P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju has held the local body and the district administration responsible for the two tragic incidents that occurred during road-widening on Sunday. Speaking at the party meeting here on Tuesday, Mr. Ashok said that basic guidelines were not followed prior to execution of the work. The party was not against road-widening but it favoured development as per the guidelines. He recalled that in 2002 a survey identified a few roads for widening taking the projected traffic in 2010. But, keeping in view the centuries-old structures in the town, a ring road was proposed for traffic diversion, he said, and added that no one was injured during execution of the work then. He criticised the Collector for remaining “insensitive” to TDP’s appeal for public safety when two persons sustained injuries on the first day of the road-widening. He said the Collector assured a party delegation that he would talk to the Commissioner. Party Floor leader in the council V.S. Prasad said Congress councillors, at an emergency meeting on July 13, unilaterally decided to widen the road from Three Lamps junction to Ambati Choultry. Chairperson M. Geetha did not invite officials from the R& B, Telecom, Transco and other departments for a discussion and also did not seek suggestions from opposition councillors, he said.
