Patna: The Patna High Court on Tuesday asked the Bihar Government to file within eight weeks a report on progress on its directive to recover funds allegedly defalcated by officials of various departments in the State between 1989 and 2005. A Division Bench of justice Narayan Roy and justice K K Mandal, while hearing a PIL filed by the council for protection of public rights and liberty, Patna, which alleged that the State officials had swindled Rs.17,000 crore in various departments between 1989 and 2005, said the State Government must ensure speedy recovery and file a report on the progress made in this connection within eight weeks. Earlier, State counsel Prabhat Tekriwal told the court that the State Government had so far recovered Rs. 9.80 lakh and registered 31 FIRs against the officials found to be involved in the swindle. Two officials found involved in the embezzlement had already been dismissed, he said. M. P. Gupta, appearing on behalf of the council for protection of public rights and liberty, expressed concern over the tardy progress in recovering the defalcated money and urged the court to issue necessary instructions. - PTI
