Foster good reading habits, V-C tells parents

A.V. Ragunathan

Valedictory of Neyveli Book Fair-2007 held

NEYVELI: Vice-Chancellor of Anna University D. Vishwanathan has called upon the parents to initiate their wards into reading good books from the childhood.

Besides improving the horizon of knowledge, and igniting imagination and creativity, the books would foster filial love among children, if the parents adopt the habit of telling them bedtime stories or reading out from quality books, Mr. Vishwanathan said.

Delivering the valedictory address at the Neyveli Book Fair-2007 here on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor recommended reading literary books that would introduce them to new people, places, and ideas; build their vocabulary and strengthen their use of language. Books were carriers of civilisation. Without books, history would be silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill.

Pleasant experiences with books during the formative years were vital for a continuing love and curiosity into adulthood. Once exposed to various kinds of books such as picture, story, rhymes, adventure and mystery and reference books, reading would become a treasured part of the child’s life, he said.

Best resources

The parents should make it a point to discuss with their children the people and incidents in the story. A good collection of books was the greatest resources of mankind. In this connection, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the need for buying books rather than borrowing them. He said a borrowed book was like a guest in the house, whereas the books purchased would be treated with affectionate intimacy.

Since, books were of the people, by the people and for the people, they were meant for use and not for show. In this context, the libraries in educational institutions acquired special significance.

He honoured Anto Peter, a writer, and Meenakshi Putha Nilayam, a publisher. K.S. Anandan, NLC Director (Mines) and P. Babu Rao, NLC Director (Personnel) also spoke.
