Special adalats for the disabled

Bidar: The State Government will organise special adalats in the districts and taluks to solve problems faced by the physically challenged, said Das Suryavanshi, Commissioner for Disabled Welfare, in Bidar on Monday.
Reviewing the progress of government welfare programmes for the disabled, he said these adalats would be used to create awareness among the physically challenged about their rights and about government programmes for them.
According to him, there were 9.56 lakh physically challenged people in the State.
Of them, 30,224 were in Bidar. Among these, 17,343 were men and 12,881 women.
Among the number of the physically challenged, 13,200 were visually challenged, and 10,399 suffered from dysfunctional limbs, 4,051 were hearing impaired and 2,561 were mentally challenged.
The Government was taking steps to ensure the welfare of such persons. As much as 3 per cent reservation was provided in education and employment in government and semi-government institutions.
Nodal officers would be appointed to implement welfare programmes for them, medical boards had been constituted to provide medical certificates to the physically challenged, these certificates would be issued free, and public telephone booths and canteens in government hospitals were given on priority to such persons.
