State ready for talks on Mullaperiyar

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government is ready to continue talks with the Tamil Nadu Government to sort out their differences of opinion over the Mullaperiyar issue, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran has said.

Replying to questions in the Assembly on Tuesday, Mr. Premachandran said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had already conveyed his Government’s willingness for bilateral talks to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. But Tamil Nadu had not responded to repeated requests of Kerala to provide information on seepage of water from the dam, he said.

The Dam Safety Authority was formed as per the provisions of the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation Act to monitor the safety and security of all dams in the State. Twenty-two dams were under the purview of the Authority. Members of the Authority had inspected the Mullaperiyar dam three times. The Government would not interfere with the functioning of the Authority, which had a quasi-judicial nature, and would faithfully implement its directions including decommissioning of a dam. The Government would implement the direction to reduce the water level in the Chimony dam by 3 metres. A pilot project would be taken up to desilt dams. Desilting of the Peechi and Malampuzha dams would be taken up as a pilot project, he said.

Marriage registration

Law Minister M. Vijayakumar said the Government would take all sections into confidence before implementing a law on registration of marriages.

Mr. Achuthanandan had held a meeting with organisations of minority communities on June 13. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that 1,078 criminal cases involving leaders of various parties were withdrawn with the permission of courts since the Government took over.

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy said that ‘kala azar’ fever was detected in Kollam, Kozhikode and Thrissur.

Mosquitoes causing yellow fever and white nile fever were found in different parts of the State, but no cases had been reported, she said.
