Bridge across Bhavani River will be ready by Dec.

Staff Reporter

It is constructed at a cost of R. 3 cr.

ERODE: The long-awaited bridge across River Bhavani connecting Gobichettipalayam and Kallipatty will be ready by December, said Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan.

Many villages such as Nanjagoundenpalayam, Mevani, Athani and Kallipatty are located on the banks of the river. Residents of Nanjagoundenpalayam have to cross the river by ferries to reach Kallipatty. Or they have to take a deviated route of more than 16 km to reach other side. Hundreds of students, farmers, agricultural labourers and others have to go through an ordeal as a result of this.

A representation was made to the State Government in 2000 and when Mr M. Karunanidhi was Chief Minister in early 2001, a foundation was laid for the construction of the bridge across River Bhavani connecting Kallipatty and Nanjagoundenpalayam.

The work is in progress and on Monday Mr. Saminathan visited the bridge construction work.

He told reporters that the bridge was being constructed at a cost of Rs. 3 crore and would be completed before December.
