KOLKATA: A three-day holiday has been declared for the Bujrugdighi High School in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district after several girl students fell ill over the past few days as word spread about the presence of “ghosts” on the school premises. On Tuesday, school authorities informed the District Inspector of Schools [Secondary], Tapan Kumar Basu, of their decision to close the school following requests from local residents and guardians of students. Speaking to The Hindu over telephone, Mr. Basu said that it was “appalling that the notion of ghosts haunting the school during broad daylight and victimising only female students could be prevalent even in the 21st century 221;. About 30 girl students of various classes of this government-aided secondary school in the Raina block of the district, have fainted or taken ill ever since stories of ghosts haunting the school spread, Mr. Basu said. “Whether such phobia could induce sickness needs to be medically ascertained. A report is awaited from the local health authorities regarding the nature of the sickness suffered by the victims,” he added.
