Briancon: Tour rookie Juan Mauricio Soler Hernandez of Colombia won Tuesday’s ninth stage of the 2007 Tour de France, the last one in the Alps, with a daring personal exploit. The 24-year-old Soler took off on his own on the fabled ascent up to the Galibier Pass and nursed his lead during the long descent to Briancon, to record his first-ever Tour stage victory, and the first-ever for his Barloworld team. Soler’s performance even impressed French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who followed the last part of the stage in the car of Tour director Christian Prudhomme. Soler covered the 159.5-km course from the Alpine resort of Val d’Isere to Briancon in 4 hours 14 minutes 24 seconds, an average speed of 38.92 kmph. Spaniard Alejandro Valverde finished second, 38 seconds behind, with Australian Cadel Evans coming in third. Michael Rasmussen of Denmark finished sixth to keep the yellow jersey. — DPA
