Tribals occupy 80 acres of forest land

Staff Reporter

CPI(M) spearheads the campaign

Women also take part in the programme

Land struggle will be intensified, says party leader

KHAMMAM: Some 80 aces of forest land was occupied by tribal communities in Bojjiguppa village in Bhadrachalam division as part of the CPI(M)-sponsored `bhooporatam’ on Tuesday.

Led by District Cooperative Central Bank chairman T. S. Prasad and other senior leaders of the party the tribal families cleared the wild growth and engaged themselves in tilling and sowing operations for the whole day. Women also took part in large number in the programme.

Addressing the tribal families, the Khammam DCCB chief said that the tribal farmers were deprived of legitimate right on the lands in their enjoyment for decades. The administration was not in favour of giving them pattas for the lands in their occupation.

He said many such tribal farmers did not qualify for the compensation for the lands acquired for the Polavaram project.

He said the fight for land would be intensified further in the tribal pockets as well as the plains.

Over 5000 applications short listed for issue of house sites in Khammam town quite some time ago, were yet to be considered by the revenue authorities.

He said that the CPI (M) would oppose by all means the construction of the Polavarm project which would displace hundreds of tribal families.

New Democracy protest

The CPI (ML New Democracy) in the meantime staged a protest programme in Velerpadu in the day demanding a fair deal for those being displaced by the Polavaram project.

They wanted the rehabilitation and resettlement package to be implemented liberally by enhancing the rates of compensation.

They also demanded the administration to pay the compensation to the genuine pattedars instead of those enjoying the lands illegally.
