Bail granted for Army officer

Correspondent

CUTTACK: Army officer Subhrakant Mohanty, who was arrested by the Bhubaneswar police last week and handed over to the Army for court martial following a direction from the Orissa High Court, was granted bail by Bhubaneswar SDJM court on Tuesday.

D.K. Singh Deo, Commanding Officer of Bhubaneswar Military Station, produced Mohanty before the court of Arun Kumar Sahu who granted him bail after going through the case diary.

Airfield police of the capital arrested the Mohanty on charges of assaulting a civilian causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation on July 11. He was forwarded to court and remanded in jail custody.

But, in a special sitting of the Orissa High Court held at the residence of Justice M.M. Das on Saturday, a Division Bench of the High Court directed the lower court to handover Mohanty, a commissioner officer of the Indian Army, to the Station Commander of Bhubaneswar Military Station for the purpose of being tried by a Court Martial immediately.

The court also directed the Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Singh Deo to file an undertaking before the SDJM court that he shall produce the accused officer on July 17 before the lower court for consideration of the bail application.

Mohanty was arrested under Sections 341, 325, 294 and 506 of the IPC.
