HYDERABAD: AP Transco has stopped purchase of power from all outside sources and restricted even overdrawal from the southern grid to a negligible level. The changed scenario is due to heavy generation of power from Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar hydel stations using the floods in the Krishna river. The two projects, with a total installed capacity of 2,635 MW, are offering 60 million units daily, more than a third of the total supply (158 mu) made to the consumers in the State. APTransco used to shell out Rs 12 crore daily for power purchases from external sources during summer but this fell to mere Rs 1 crore for the entire monsoon period till July 16. The enhanced generation by the hydel stations is expected to save significantly from the allotment of Rs 2,800 crore earmarked for external purchases this year. The increased output at Srisailam and Sagar also ensured another big benefit. More number of thermal stations have been backed down for annual overhauling instead of after the monsoon period as scheduled. As a result, they will be available for operation after monsoon, implying additional generation during critical period.
