CAUGHT: Road rage murder accused in police custody on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: Road rage claimed another life in the Capital when five young men allegedly bludgeoned to death a 35-year-old property dealer after their motorcycle hit his car at Lado Sarai here on Monday night. Four of the accused have been arrested while the fifth is still at large.

It all happened around 10-30 p.m. when two young men on a motorcycle hit Jitender Pawar’s Maruti Zen car near the Lado Sarai traffic signal. After a heated exchange of words, Jitender drove away towards Anuvrat Marg. The two young men, soon joined by three of their friends on another motorcycle, began trailing him and intercepted the car at a T-point.

When Jitender got off his vehicle and objected, a scuffle ensued. The five allegedly attacked Jitender with a stick and helmets. As he collapsed on the road, one of the five smashed his head and face with a stone. They then vanished from the scene, leaving a profusely bleeding Jitender sprawled on the road.

Meanwhile, Constable Rohtash Kumar of the Saket police post on night patrol duty spotted the victim lying on the road. The constable along with Mohammad Sagir, a friend of Jitender’s who happened to be passing that way, rushed him to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, where Jitender succumbed to his injuries.

Late at night, the Malviya Nagar police constituted a team led by Inspector Harpal Singh and Inspector Pankaj Singh and launched a hunt for the culprits. Enquiries revealed that the assailants were residents of Khanpur and nearby areas and one of them had sustained a cut on his face while fleeing. The police also recovered a torn portion of a shirt of one of the culprits.

The team zeroed in on 21-year-old Sandeep who had a cut on his face. During interrogation, he purportedly confessed to his involvement and disclosed that he and Rakesh (19) were riding the motorcycle when the accident took place.

It led to an altercation with Jitender following which Rakesh’s brother Murari and friends Suresh (22) and Chander (22) also joined them. They then intercepted Jitender’s car and allegedly bludgeoned him to death.

At Sandeep’s instance, the police arrested Rakesh, Suresh and Chander and have launched a hunt for Murari.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Anil Shukla said Sandeep is a driver, Suresh a supervisor of cabs at a call centre, and Rakesh works as a driver.

The victim, Jitender, was the father of a young son and daughter.
