BANGALORE: To foster civic and environmental consciousness among children, Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA) will launch civic clubs in city schools for the eighth consecutive year on July 21. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, CMCA Coordinator Vrunda Bhaskar said more than 2,000 children are already working towards improving the quality of life and the surroundings through these civic clubs. “A civic club is an association of students in each school to promote students’ participation in civic and environmental activities and spread awareness about civic sense. These clubs are formed under various names such as Eco Rangers, Green Corps, Safety Warriors, Eco Buddies and Heaven Creators,” she said. Stating that the objective of CMCA was to educate and engage youngsters in the process of reclaiming civic virtues and citizenship in Bangalore, Ms. Vrunda said member-students would get to participate in exciting and fun-filled activities to learn about the city, its problems and what they could do to improve the situation. Students would get to participate in interactive sessions, make models and run campaigns in school, she said. The programme titled “Inspiration 2007” will include sessions on issues such as solid waste management, local governance and environmental issues. That apart, CMCA would also arrange field trips to Karnataka Compost Development Corporation, sewage treatment plants and Lalbagh for bird watching. Participating schools that have encouraged and partnered with CMCA include Al-Ameen School, Army Public School, ASC Public School, B.M. English School, Baldwin Boys and Girls High Schools, Bangalore Military School, Bishop Cotton Boys and Girls High Schools, Corporation Schools in Jogupalya, Cleveland Town, Srirampura and Government schools in Ejipura, Marenahalli, Wilson Garden and Frank Antony Public School. This year’s programme, to be held at St Joseph’s Indian High School Grounds, will have stalls on “water” (the focus issue for this year) by various agencies. Chairperson of Arghyam Rohini Nilekani will inaugurate the programme and interact with children. Game stalls, inter-club games and written quiz on water, civic and environmental issues will also be part of the programme, Ms. Vrunda added.
