Beedi workers stage protest

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: South Kanara Beedi Workers Federation affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress staged a protest in front of the office of Ganesh Beedis here on Tuesday.

Reason

They were protesting against the managements of beedi companies violating the agreement signed on January 30 last. As per the agreement signed before the Joint Labour Commissioner, the managements had agreed to pay Rs. 4,500 to every worker as arrears of dearness allowance for ten years by June 30, 2007.

Addressing the protestors S. Chandappa Anchan, general secretary of the federation, said the beedi companies had not paid the amount. The managements were trying to cheat the workers by paying them Rs. 1,000 while getting them sign vouchers for Rs. 4,500. The issue has been brought to the notice of the department of labour, police and Deputy Commissioner, he said.

P.Sanjeev, president of the South Kanara Beedi Workers Federation and other office bearers of the federation were present.
