Kumbakonam tragedy commemorated

A demonstration was held by the Arunodhaya Children’s Associations on Tuesday here to commemorate the 2004 Kumbakonam tragedy that left 94 children dead. Participants demanded that July 16 be declared as Children’s Safety Day.

Cultural programmes were held to drive home the message that violence in schools existed in many forms.

The continuing disregard for children’s safety and the abuses – emotional, physical and sexual – that children had to face should be taken note of by the authorities, speakers said.

Such problems in the education system would only result in increases in the dropout rate, they said.
