Panchaloha idol of Lord Buddha.
GUNTUR: The Guntur police on Tuesday foiled a bid by some persons to sell a 1.5 kg Panchaloha idol of Buddha here and arrested five persons in this connection. According to Guntur East Circle Inspector D. Vijayabhaskara Reddy, the idol was unearthed at Bapatla seven months ago during construction works and was taken in possession by Rajavarapu Srinivasa Rao, a worker engaged for filling of a partly collapsed well at Patel Nagar in Bapatla. However, the latter concealed the information and had been keeping the idol with him for the past six months. On Monday, the accused along with four other friends came to Guntur to sell the idol at a jewellery shop in Patnam Bazaar. On getting the information, a police team led by the C.I nabbed them. The idol has been dated to 19th century and its value was estimated at Rs.2 lakh. If any antique idol is found, the people are advised to report the matter to the police station or the mandal revenue officer,” Mr. Reddy said. Sub Inspector, Lalapet police station, M. Hanumantha Rao was present.
