CHENNAI: In view of the copious inflow into the Mettur reservoir, the State Government on Tuesday decided to advance the release of water from the reservoir to July 18.
The shutters of the Stanley reservoir will be lifted by 6 p.m. on Wednesday, according to an official press release.
The Government had earlier announced that the reservoir would be opened on July 25 for samba irrigation in delta districts. In the meanwhile, the reservoir started getting an inflow of more than 50,000 cusecs.
The Government expects the realisation at the reservoir to increase substantially in the coming days and advanced the date for opening the reservoir.
Realisation
Realisation in the reservoir at noon on Tuesday was 54,048 cusecs and storage 71.135 thousand million cubic (tmc) feet as against the capacity of 93.4 tmc ft.
The level stood at 104.75 feet against the full level of 120 feet.
The inflow into the reservoir is bound to increase substantially in the next two days as Karnataka is releasing heavily from its reservoirs. On Tuesday, it discharged more than 74,000 cusecs from the Kabini dam (46,000 cusecs) and the Krishnaraja Sagar (28,000 cusecs).
A Public Works Department official here said on an average the Mettur reservoir was getting 4 tmcft to 5 tmcft per day.
Heavy rains
As rain continued to lash catchment areas of the Kabini and Cauvery rivers, Karnataka had to release the entire inflow to Tamil Nadu as its reservoirs had reached their full level.
On Tuesday, catchments of the Kabini received 11 cm rain and that of the Cauvery 13 cm.
