‘Fake stamp paper’ case accused pleads guilty

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: An accused in the multi-crore ‘fake stamp paper’ case has pleaded guilty before a Special Court for CBI cases here.

Sarfraz Nawaz, now housed in the Bangalore prison, filed a memo before Special Judge N. Velu when he was produced on Tuesday.

The Judge, adjourning the matter to July 26 for further proceedings, said any order on the guilt plea could be passed only after charges were framed in the case, that too after affording reasonable opportunity to the accused. Sarfraz Nawaz is facing four charges – conspiracy, counterfeiting, cheating and forgery.

The remand of three other accused – Abdul Karim Telgi, Abdul Wahid and Jacob Chacko – was extended through video-conferencing by the judge.

Of the total of 11 accused in the case, eight, including former Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Ali and Deputy Superintendent of Police Shankar, were present in court on Tuesday.

The two have been accused of not taking action against one of the accused, despite knowing his involvement in the crime.
