NEW DELHI: The Employees State Insurance (ESI) Act, 1948 will be reviewed for improving the quality of medical care to workers and meeting their emerging medical needs. This was decided at the 139th meeting of the ESI Corporation held here on Tuesday. ESIC Chairperson and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes, who presided over the meeting, said the review would be completed within three months. The meeting was informed that Rs. 168.11 crore was recovered from defaulters as arrears contribution and interest in the last financial year constituting 93.37 per cent of the target. Similarly, Rs. 100.71 crore was recovered from defaulting units in a special drive launched from November 2006 to March 2007. The meeting was told that 79 prosecution cases were launched under the Act in the first quarter of the current year. On coverage of new areas, the meeting was informed that 60 new centres would be covered in 2007-08, covering over 1.82 lakh employees.
