NEW DELHI: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has suggested re-examination of some basic features of the health programmes to address nutrition, drinking water, sanitation, education and women’s empowerment issues. He said the range of work of various cadres, the skills required at various levels, reporting channels, and budget need to be rationalised to respond to the requirements in the health sector. Speaking at the third meeting of the Mission Steering Group of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) here on Tuesday, Dr. Ramadoss said the era of rigid, vertically designed health programmes without any horizontal intrasectoral and intersectoral linkages was over and all health sector initiatives now had to view health as a range of preventive, promotive and curative care. Dr. Ramadoss said that to achieve this, his Ministry had been communicating the guidelines on various issues to the States and with the Secretaries of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Water Supply that had accelerated the shift towards synergistic policy making rather than duplicating the efforts in a compartmentalised manner.
