Refutes charges

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina has refuted the charges of extortion when she was Prime Minister during 1996-2001, brought against her by the Government. She made an open allegation in the court on Monday that the charges were brought against her as the military-backed Government was angry with her for demanding restoration of people’s voting rights and holding early elections.

“I am not an offender, I am not an extortionist. My family and political ideology did not teach me to commit extortion but to serve people,” she said in the court, which rejected her bail petition and ordered her sent to jail.

The 59-year-old politician termed the cases against her as “false” and “fabricated”.
