Suchde roars past Rana

SQUASH / Seeded players have it easy

CHENNAI: Non-stop action but easy wins. That was the story on the opening day of the ICL-National squash championship at the ICL academy courts here on Tuesday.

While some of the seeded players did not even need to get to the court as their opponents failed to turn up, the others had to just turn up to win. Such was the gulf in standards.

Defending champion Joshna Chinappa and her key rival Dipika Pallikal will have to wait until Wednesday morning to play their first shots, while for Saurav Ghosal and Gaurav Nandrajog there was some ‘work’, if the few minutes’ stay on the court can be termed so.

Facile win

Equally facile was the way Siddarth Suchde, a neat player who is seeking to make a major headway in the sport after just graduating from Harvard, went about his opening second round fixture against a lesser-known player, A. Rana, a student from NDA.

Suchde, seeded three/four in the draw, spent more time for the warm-up exercises prior to the match than on the court as the rallies were few and the points came easily.

Rana cannot be blamed because he has hardly been in such high-level competition unlike his opponent who plays in the professional circuit.

Parthiban went through two rounds almost at a stretch and seemed ready for more after easing past his opponents.
