Abhijeet shocked

NEW DELHI: Most Indians scored expected victories over Spanish rivals in the opening round of the 12th Balaguer International Open chess tournament at Balaguer, Spain, on Monday.

However, the 12th seeded International Master Abhijeet Gupta suffered a shock loss at the hands of lowly-rated Joel Visa Jordana.

The results (first round): Abhijeet Gupta lost to Joel Visa Jordana (Esp); Ruslan Pogorelov (Ukr) bt Devangi Patankar; B. Adhiban bt Inma Montoliu Doroca (Esp); Laia Barbosa Rubies (Esp) lost to Aswin Jayaram; Joshua Solani Nunez (Esp) lost to Dinesh Kumar Sharma; Jose Leon Valera (Esp) lost to R. Arun Karthik.
