dated July 19, 1957: Sleeping berths

The Southern Railway will provide sleeping accommodation for third class passengers every day on the Bangalore Mail between Madras and Bangalore and back with effect from July 22 in a specially built two-tier sleeping-cum-sitting coach. In this coach, sleeping accommodation will be provided on the upper berths for 24 passengers. In addition, this coach provides on the lower berths seating accommodation for 80 passengers. A separate luggage room has also been provided with collapsible door and seat for an attendant adjoining it. The existing third class mail fare from the station from which the journey commences plus a special surcharge of Rs.3 per night, or part of a night, per passenger for sleeping accommodation, will be levied. A separate sleeping accommodation ticket will be issued for the surcharge. No special reservation fee is to be collected.
