PUDUCHERRY: It was an eye opener for the newly inducted National Service Scheme volunteers of St. Patrick Higher Secondary School, who learnt about the NSS logo, the NSS motto, and its aims. A release from the school said, students of Standards XI and XII took part in a one-day training programme organised at the school, in which Martin Selvaraj of the Sociology Department of Kanchi Mamunivar P.G. Institute was the chief guest. Mr. Selvaraj shared his experiences in the NSS for the past 25 years. R. Fredrick, principal, who presided over the function, said that last year the NSS volunteers visited orphanages, old age homes, visited leprosy patients and distributed pamphlets with messages during Deepavali. Along with the 50 NSS volunteers, 50 National Green Corps (NGC) volunteers and 25 Community Service Scheme (CSS) volunteers also took part in the programme. Balan, NGC secretary; Anandraj, CSS programme officer; and Emile, NSS programme officer; were present on the occasion. Another press release from the school said that S. Surekha of Standard VIII secured the sixth place in the 24th Sub-Junior National Aquatic Championship 2007 conducted by the Goa Swimming Association. V. Vijai of Standard IX participated in the A.F.T. Chess Club Championship 2007 in the under 14 years category and secured the first place in the event. He also secured 7/8 points and has been placed first in the State in the under 25 Chess Championship 2007 organised by the Pondicherry State Chess Association. Mageswar, Neil Dominic O’Brien and Priya of Standard X, and Abilash, Subash Chandra Bose, Karthikeyan, Balakrishnan and Sivaramakrishnan of Standard IX of the same school received commendation certificates from the Pondicherry Police Department for the successful completion of the Children’s Traffic Corps training.
