Awarded: Health Minister E. Valsaraj presents an award to H. Nirmal Kumar in Puducherry.
PUDUCHERRY: To mark the 105th birth anniversary of the late Congress leader Kamaraj, 21 achievers, including those who had entered the Limca Book of Records for their feats, were honoured at a function organised by the Rahul Gandhi Desiya Peravai here on Tuesday. Health Minister E. Valsaraj, who presented the awards to the achievers, said in his address that Puducherry was a very unique Union Territory, and that people like film director Manoj Night Shyamalan, who was from the place, had risen to great heights. He appreciated the efforts of the award winners and said that many of them had attempted extraordinary tasks and succeeded in executing them. He said that even he had set a record by being the only MLA to have won five times consecutively from his constituency. Mr. Valsaraj also said that the Rangasamy government was providing a lot of sops for students, the poor and the general public, which no other government in the country was doing. He said that there was a general opposition for the opening of private colleges, but the Government was for setting up a healthy competition among institutions and also for giving students a choice of institutions to choose from. Medical, engineering and B.Ed colleges had enabled several citizens of the Union Territory to secure jobs, he added. K Sekaran of the Peravai, and Samraj, president of the students wing of the Congress, were present on the occasion. Among those who were honoured were H. Nirmal Kumar, who had performed around 100 yogasanas at a height of 60 feet, and Arichandra S. Murugan for his contribution to society. G. Suriyapriya, who secured the first place in the weightlifting event at the National level, T. Sangeetha, who had given a continuous Bharathanatyam performance, Ou. Premanandane, who swam with his hands tied behind, and Harikrishnan, who skipped rope while riding a bicycle, were also awarded.
