BANGALORE: Recently, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy inaugurated a junior college in remote B.M. Kaval, off Kanakapura Road. What could be so unusual about that, one might ask. For one, the Chief Minister could have stayed away, but attend he did, and in his inaugural address, he spoke of the “brave lady who had taught him about the importance of being disciplined.” He was speaking of Geetha Ramanujam, who had taught him during his course at the National College in Jayanagar. Both Mr. Kumaraswamy, and his teacher, Dr. Ramanujam, the founder of the G.R. Junior College, have indeed come a long way since then. The junior college is yet to start admitting students, but it promises to be an unusual institution, focusing more on students from rural areas, and giving them a head start with her own brand of philosophy. G.R., it turns out stands for Gnana Rasa. Having long nursed a desire to set up an exclusive education centre which serves the underprivileged, Dr. Ramanujam has been preparing for it for over 15 years. At G.R. Junior College, Dr. Ramanujam has set out to provide a meeting ground for the old and the young, where the wisdom and experience of the old will guide the future citizens.
