POSCO initiates rehabilitation steps

Special Correspondent

High-level meet discusses measures in detail

First rehabilitation colony to house 48 families

Displaced to be provided benefits as per norms

BHUBANESWAR: South Korean steel major POSCO has not taken possession of any land for its ambitious steel project in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district so far. But the process has already begun to set up the first rehabilitation colony for the people coming from the project area.

The first rehabilitation colony for the people to be displaced by the POSCO project will house 48 families who had left Patna village under Dhinkia gram panchayat following rifts with those opposing the steel project tooth and nail.

The details of the rehabilitation measures for the families leaving their homes in the area earmarked for the project was discussed in detail at a high-level meeting at the State Secretariat here on Wednesday.

Initially, a total of 42 families had left Patna village nearly three weeks ago and taken shelter in a college building near Bhutmundai, a few km away from the troubled project area. Their number has since increased to 48.

Transit camp

According to sources, the meeting decided that a transit camp would be set up to provide shelter to the 48 families within one month.

Simultaneously, efforts are being made to select a site for constructing a rehabilitation colony for these families a little distance away from the project area.

These families will be provided rehabilitation benefits as per the provisions of the State Government’s Resettlement and Rehabilitation Policy that was adopted last year.

Benefits

The benefits will include a proper dwelling unit, one job each for the families and monetary compensation for the amount of land they would give for the steel project within the project area.

Among others who attended the high-level meeting include Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy, senior officials of POSCO-India, Nodal Officer for the steel project Priyabrata Patnaik, Jagatsinghpur District Collector Pramod Kumar Meherda and Jagatsighpur Superintendent of Police Y.K. Jethwa.
