PROTEST: Police preventing anganwadi staff from taking out a procession in Puducherry on Wednesday.
Puducherry: Anganwadi workers, who have been protesting against their mass transfer, continued their agitation for the 15th day in succession on Wednesday. They squatted on the road close to Subbiah Salai in the heart of the town. Later, when they tried to take out a procession towards the Assembly premises, the police prevented them from going ahead and took a large number of agitators into custody. President of the Confederation of Government Employees Associations C.H. Balamohanan was among those who were arrested. General Secretary of the confederation R. Anandarasan told newsmen that Mr. Balamohanan and a few other office bearers were admitted to the hospital owing to “forceful” arrest by the police. The strike would continue although Chief Minister N. Rangasamy had asked them to wait for a few days till the Presidential election was over. Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy told them that it was the first transfer in their 25-year career. It was only meant to have the staff shifted within the zone, and no staff needed to go beyond five km to reach their work place. A stalemate is virtually prevailing now, with the Minister and the staff sticking to their stand. Convener of the People’s Action Committee T. Murugan said he had led delegation of political parties and members of the confederation to persuade the Chief Minister to rescind the transfer orders. Should there be any necessity for shuffling, the Government should effect it through counselling. He said that police had acted in a highhanded manner while arresting the staff.
