District panchayat sets development agenda

Kannur: Development of housing and basic facilities, organic farming of vegetables, paddy cultivation in the wasteland areas of Kattampally here and involvement of Kudumbasree units for agricultural development in the district will be the thrust of the district panchayat’s development projects for 2007-08.

District panchayat president K.K. Narayanan said at a meeting of stakeholders of the projects for the current financial year here on Wednesday that a comprehensive scheme in animal husbandry sector being finalised included projects for goat, pig rearing, poultry and dairy development with biogas facilities.

The district panchayat would also give emphasis on training women in garment making, handloom weaving and in electronic, computer and solar equipment repairing.

Over 10,000 houses would be constructed under the bank-assisted Bhavanasree project over the next three years. Mr. Narayanan said that annual agricultural and industrial fairs would be conducted by the district panchayat.
