4,000 families shifted to 38 relief camps

Rs.2.35 crore disbursed for flood relief in district


MALAPPURAM: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has said the Adivasi families affected by floods would get free ration till Onam. He said the district suffered a loss of Rs.20 crore in the floods and landslips since Monday evening.

Addressing a meeting convened to review the flood situation at the Collectorate conference hall here on Wednesday evening, Mr. Rajendran said 16,024 people across the district had been affected by the floods. Twenty people were killed in rain-related incidents since the monsoon set in. Ninety-two houses were destroyed and 2,518 others damaged. Eranad and Nilambur taluks were the worst hit in the district. Fifty-six villages were inundated in the second phase of floods this month. In the first phase earlier this month, 68 villages were affected.

District administration officials said Rs.2.35 crore had been disbursed for flood relief in Malappuram. As many as 4,000 families were shifted to 38 relief camps. Mr. Rajendran said special teams of the Rapid Action Force would arrive in Malappuram, Kannur and Wayanad to assist the authorities. Three Naval teams from the Ezhimala Naval Academy had been sent to Wayanad, he said. A meeting of panchayat councillors would be convened to discuss the flood situation in the district.

MLAs demand

MLAs who took part in the meeting demanded that the relief camps functioning at schools should be closed down immediately and alternative arrangements found. The Minister said he would consider the demand.

The Minister said priority would be given to repairing and reconstruction of the flood-hit houses and roads. District panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed demanded free ration for all those affected by the floods in the district.

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom, Collector Sumana N. Menon, District Superintendent of Police P. Vijayan, MLAs Anil Kumar and Mohammedunni Haji participated in the meeting.
